Graphing & Data

Collecting, showing, and reading simple data.

What does data look like before children can write?

Shoes. Line up everyone’s shoes by color and you’ve made a graph. At this age the graph is the real objects, or pictures stuck in a row, and nothing gets written down. What changes is how much your child does alone: joining in at three, setting it up at four, reading something out of it by Kindergarten.

What each age is working on

The codes beside each line are the state’s own labels: Texas writes Prekindergarten Guidelines for Pre-K, and TEKS from Kindergarten up.
